Prepping your item for painting:

So many paint companies claim that their paint does not need any prep work. This is simply not true. Every paint job needs prep work, but maybe not the kind of prep work you are used to hearing about: sanding. You do not need to sand any item you want to paint, only if you need to even out bumps or repairs you made.

Depending on what you are painting, the only prep work you have to do is clean it thoroughly. And when we say thoroughly, we really mean it. The amount of grime and grease on a piece of furniture (especially an older piece) is unbelievable and unless you clean it, the paint won't adhere properly to it. 75% of a paint job is proper cleaning!

We use White Lightning for that. White Lightning is a powder that you dissolve in water (instructions are on the jar) and that will de-grease and remove all debris from your furniture, kitchen cabinets or whatever you want to paint. You can clean with a lint-free rag (like an old T-shirt) but I simply use a scrubby sponge. Many people tried the same with blue dawn, and it simply doesn't work. Scrub that furniture down and you will be surprised how much dirt comes off.

After you have cleaned with White Lightning, make sure you go over it with a clean, damp rag to clean up any left over residue and start painting with your favorite Dixie Belle color.

Problem Solving:

The paint doesn't stick to the surface -- Sometimes the surface you want to paint gives you a problem. It can be super slick (like glass, metal, laminate or veneer or any other slick surface) and paint does not adhere properly to that. You solve that with adding 2 coats of Slick Stick after you cleaned your piece with White Lightning and let it dry. Slick stick is an adhesive and it will adhere to to the surface you want to paint. Once it's dry, you can paint over it with your the Dixie belle paint color of your choice.

The furniture has a musty smell -- This is one we hear a lot and there is only one solution called B.O.S.S. which stands for Blocks Odor, Stains, Stops Bleed through. After cleaning and drying, apply one coat of B.O.S.S and let it dry for at least an hour. Then apply a second coat and let that dry for at least an hour as well and that will lock in any smells and stains. After the second layer dried you can paint over it with your favorite Dixie Belle paint color.

Old paint is bleeding through -- This problems is very common, especially with woods like knotty pine, mahogany and cherry and other soft woods. You will know this when you beautifully newly painted piece is starting to turn yellow. I am sure after 5-6 layers of paint this will stop but it's much easier to seal in the old coat with 2 coats of B.O.S.S. and then paint it. Problem solved and no paint and time wasted.

B.O.S.S. Comes in 2 colors: white and clear. The clear version applies white but dries completely clear, and the white version is perfect for you need a white base color when you want to paint a darker piece with lighter colors.. This is especially handy of you plan on distressing. I put 2 B.O.S.S. coats standard on any piece of furniture I paint. It's a time, frustration, and money saver.

Painting:

Dixie Belle has 64 colors and a few limited edition colors. You can without problems mix colors and create the color you want. Now that your furniture is prepped, you are ready for painting! Always paint with a damp paint brush. My favorite is the Dixie Belle Mini. A little paint goes a long way, and painting with a damp brush makes it go even further and it moves the paint better. I always paint with a brush in one hand and a misting water bottle in the other.

Once you're done painting and your piece has dried you can either let it cure for 30 days, or you can choose to put a top coat on it.
